South Africa is one of those bewitching countries that rewards you at every turn. Where else can you watch African penguins waddle across white sand at breakfast, sip a superb Chenin Blanc at a centuries-old wine estate by afternoon, and the next day listen to the distant rumble of lions at night? This is a country of extraordinary contrasts—rugged and refined, ancient and urgently alive—and we’ve designed a journey that lets you sink into all of it.
South Africa has emerged from a difficult history with something rare: a collective philosophy rooted in the Nguni word ubuntu—“I am because we are.” It’s an ethos of shared humanity, and you’ll feel it in the warmth of the people you meet, from Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap cooks to the Soweto artists shaping a new generation’s story.
We’ve added the NextTribe layer: insider access, time with local women who inspire us, and the kind of experiences that don’t show up in guidebooks. April is fall in the Southern Hemisphere—golden light, thinner crowds, and weather that feels like a gift.
Four Unforgettable Regions
Cape Town (the “Mother City”) sits above a frothy blue sea and a crown of white beaches, with Table Mountain’s famous “tablecloth” of clouds drifting overhead.
The Cape Winelands stretch from rugged mountains to coastal plains—sweeping views, charming estates, and bottles you’ll be ordering back home for years.
Soweto (South Western Townships) is the beating cultural heart of South Africa’s freedom story and the home turf of both Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Pilanesberg National Park delivers the classic safari: a luxury bush lodge, dawn game drives, and the very real possibility of spotting all of the Big Five—lion, rhino, elephant, leopard, and African buffalo.
We have easy, interest-free payment options.
Please note that this is a sample itinerary. Accommodations and activities may change but we will always replace them with something of equal or better value.
The insider ticket. Our guides choose from every person, place, and experience they know—so you get a genuinely exclusive look at the best of the region, not the tourist version of it.
Natural wonders in abundance. Sugar-sand beaches, lush botanical gardens, sweeping vineyards, lavender-scented fields, and the wild savannah—the landscape keeps shifting and never stops being spectacular.
Delicious food, exceptional wine. From waterfront seafood shacks to elegant high teas to a proper South African braai (yes, that’s a barbecue, and yes, it’s an event), we will eat very well.
Cultural depth. We’ll explore the vivid streets of Bo-Kaap, stand in Mandela’s living room, visit the Hector Pieterson Memorial, and come away with a richer understanding of one of history’s great human struggles—and triumphs.
The women we’ll meet. Not just our fellow travelers, but the South African women who are reshaping their world—in art, community, politics, and everyday life. This is the NextTribe way: connection is the whole point.
Jeannie Ralston, NextTribe's founder, loves Africa and is so excited to lead NextTribe's trip to the very tip of the continent. One of her good friends is from South Africa and has given lots of advice on putting together an itinerary. What is she looking forward to most--besides the camaraderie with fabulous travelers? The penguins!

"I’m amazed how on each of my NextTribe trips, a bond is created immediately among a dozen women who have joined for a new experience and an adventure. It never feels as if you’re on a tour, but instead traveling the world with new friends."
--Sherry T.
"I was totally shocked by how much I enjoyed my trip with this wonderful group of ladies. We all came from various parts of the country and various backgrounds, yet we bonded like old friends. This was my first trip with the group and I will definitely be doing it again!! I'm pretty much a loner but I felt right at home. Truly a great time every minute."

Your South African adventure begins the moment you land. A guide will meet you at Cape Town International Airport and whisk you to the stylish Cloud 9 Boutique Hotel & Spa—your home base while you find your footing in this spectacular city.
Cape Town is one of those places that stops you cold on first sight. Wedged between the dramatic bulk of Table Mountain and the glittering Atlantic Ocean, it’s a city of almost unfair beauty—cosmopolitan and adventurous, with world-class food and wine and a history that is both painful and fiercely alive. Tonight, settle in, breathe the sea air, and let the anticipation build.
This morning belongs to Bo-Kaap, one of Cape Town’s most electric neighborhoods. The cobblestone streets are lined with houses painted in sherbet pinks, vivid yellows, and electric blues—not decoration but declaration. After apartheid, residents painted their homes in bold colors to reclaim their identity and freedom. The effect is joyful and defiant, all at once.
You’ll dive into the Cape Malay culture at its most flavorful: a hands-on cooking lesson drawing on the rich blend of Southeast Asian, African, and local traditions that define this community. Think fragrant curries, crispy koeksisters, and the kind of recipes passed down through generations. The meal you prepare together will be your lunch.
This afternoon, head skyward. Table Mountain is one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature—a flat-topped sentinel that has been guiding sailors home for centuries. Ride the cable car to the summit, where the views of the city, ocean, and coastline stretch out in every direction. It’s the kind of panorama that makes you feel small in the best possible way.
Head south along the Cape Peninsula, one of the most dramatic coastal drives on earth, to Cape Point—where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans negotiate their meeting. The sea cliffs are towering, the fynbos scrubland stretches to the horizon, and the old lighthouse clings to the cliff edge like it means it. This is raw, elemental South Africa.
Lunch at a local restaurant, then on to Boulders Beach—where a thriving colony of endangered African penguins has set up permanent residence among the granite boulders. They are entirely unbothered by you. Waddle for waddle, they are one of the most charming wildlife encounters you’ll have on this trip.
End the day at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, cradled in the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. The garden is world-famous for its collection of indigenous Cape plants, but what makes it magical is the setting: lush and sweeping, with the mountain at your back and the famous Boomslang (Tree Canopy Walkway) winding through the forest canopy above your head.
A short drive from Cape Town, Groot Constantia is the oldest wine estate in South Africa, founded in 1685. The Cape Dutch manor house is beautiful; the wine is better. Tucked into the Constantia Valley with mountain views all around, this estate was producing celebrated vintages when Napoleon was asking for it by name from his exile on St. Helena.
Explore the estate’s museums, taste through an elegant flight of wines, and settle in for a long, unhurried lunch. Today is a day for the pleasures that only reveal themselves slowly.
After five golden days in Cape Town, you’ll board a short flight to Johannesburg—South Africa’s most dynamic, restless, and surprising city. Arrive and settle in; tomorrow, you dive into the most historically significant neighborhood in the country.
No trip to South Africa is complete without time in Soweto, the sprawling township that was the epicenter of the anti-apartheid movement. This is where the 1976 uprising ignited a generation. This is where Mandela and Tutu both called home. And today, it’s a neighborhood alive with creativity, music, and an irrepressible forward momentum.
The Hector Pieterson Memorial is one of the most moving sites in all of Africa—a tribute to the students who rose up against an unjust system and paid the highest price. Photographs, exhibits, and firsthand testimonies bring the history into sharp, heartbreaking focus.
At the Nelson Mandela National Museum, you’ll walk through the actual house where Mandela lived before his 27-year imprisonment and returned to after his release. It’s modest. It’s extraordinary. The afternoon brings an arts and cultural workshop with local residents—one of those encounters that reminds you why NextTribe travels the way we do.
Today the landscape changes entirely as you drive into the wild. Black Rhino Game Lodge sits within Pilanesberg National Park—a volcanic crater turned wildlife sanctuary—and it is the kind of place that makes you recalibrate what “luxury” means. The lodge is intimate and beautifully appointed; the surrounding bush is home to the Big Five.
Settle in this afternoon, and let the stillness of the African bush settle over you. This evening, your first game drive begins.
Black Rhino Game Lodge is a luxury safari retreat located in the malaria-free Pilanesberg National Park in South Africa’s North West Province. Nestled at the foot of an ancient volcanic crater and tucked within a Tamboti forest, the lodge offers exclusive access to over 55,000 hectares of unspoiled wilderness. This private section of the park is rich in biodiversity and ideal for unforgettable Big Five sightings, with the added bonus of quieter, less-traveled game drive routes.
These two days belong entirely to the bush—and to you. The rhythm of a safari lodge is unlike anything else: early morning wake-up calls in the dark, hot coffee in hand, then heading out into the golden dawn light in an open vehicle while the park comes to life around you.
A typical day at Black Rhino:
5:00–6:00 AM: Wake-up call, hot beverages, and a light snack. Then into the open vehicle as the sky turns pink.
Morning game drive: Two to three hours in Pilanesberg as elephants cross your path, giraffes amble through the acacia trees, and if luck is with you, a leopard regards you from a branch above.
9:00–11:30 AM: A proper, hearty breakfast. You’ve earned it.
Midday: The savannah rests and so do you. Pool, spa treatments (at additional cost), the viewing deck, or simply sitting still and watching the birdlife.
2:00–4:00 PM: Afternoon high tea, sweet and savory.
Late afternoon: Evening game drive as the light turns amber and the predators begin to stir.
7:00–9:00 PM: Dinner—often Boma-style, gathered around a fire under an impossible sky full of stars.
After a final breakfast and the bittersweet business of packing up, you’ll be transferred back to Johannesburg for your flight home—carrying with you the memory of a country that got under your skin in the best possible way.
Ubuntu: I am because we are. You’ll understand it now.
After booking the trip, you will recieve a travel guide with more detailed logistics and informaton.
It's tempting to book flights right away to get the best deal. We advise you wait until the trip has filled and is confirmed to book your flights. If you want to do it sooner, make sure you have good cancellation terms or trip protection insurance.
